- Microsoft Front Page for PC (Beginners)
A tried and true Website development software for beginners, Microsoft Front Page provides an interface that will be familiar to users of other Microsoft products such as Microsoft Word. Building webpages can be as easy as typing a word-processing document. If you want to get underneath into the HTML code you'll prefer one of the "Advanced" Macromedia programs listed below, which allow for cleaner code development and excellent tools for hand coding. - Adobe GoLive 6.0 (Advanced users)
A top-rated professional HTML editor for developing and managing websites. If you don't have much experience with website development, you may want to choose a simpler program than GoLive.
- Macromedia HomeSite for PC (Advanced users)
Homesite is has a lot of the features of the hand-coding side of Dreamweaver (see below), and provides an excellent hand-coding HTML development software for a good price. Some nice features in this product include the integrated HTML and CSS tutorial, code validation feature, and good integration with the Macromedia's Fireworks graphics program. Price: $85.
- DreamWeaver for PC or DreamWeaver for Mac
(Advanced users)
Dreamweaver is one of the best website development tools, allowing users to develp dynamic or static webpages, create pages visually (WYSWG) and offers a wide variety of advanced features, such as lockable templates, as well as many third party plug-ins. Dreamweaver can be purchased as a stand-alone product (about $395), or as part of a complete set of professional web development software called Macromedia Studio MX (about $700 after rebate), which includes Dreamweaver MX for page design, Flash MX for animation and interactivity, Fireworks MX for editing and optimizing graphics, FreeHand 10 (a vector image editor), and ColdFusion MX for dynamic Web applications. NOTE: Studio MX Academic version is available for $179 to students and academics with proof of student status.
