REVIEW: Currie GT Asteroid Electric Scooter (Schwinn Zone 5, Mongoose Impact)

The GT Asteroid replaces the 2002 model year Currie Phat Flyer SE, and sports a more powerful motor than the Phat Flyer, with better hill-climbing ability, as well as a front shock absorber. The Asteroid is the same model as the Schwinn Zone 5 or Mongoose Impact. All are manufactured by Currie Technologies. (If you're looking for the older model Phat Flyer SE, you may still be able to find the Phat Flyer SE for sale online for $369).

The Asteroid has a 350W motor, which is somewhat smaller than the 600W motor of the higher-end Currie scooter models. It still has a 16 mph top speed, and an 8-mile range on a single charge, and requires 5-6 hours for a full recharge with a 2 amp charger. This scooter has a front shock (no rear shock) and weighs in at 48 pounds, which makes it much easier to carry up and down stairs than the heavier Shockwave and Tsunami models.

The Asteroid has adequate speed and hill climbing ability, though if you have many hills in your area, or if you're a heavier rider, consider the more powerful Currie GT Shockwave or Tsunami scooters.

There's also an optional seat kit, available for about $50 (use seat kit# AS-425 for GT Asteroid, Kit# AS-420 for Currie Phat Flyer SE, Currie E Force Flyer, Schwinn Zone 5 and Mongoose Pro Impact). Manufacturer's warranty: 6 months.
