Hi-tech Reporting from Afghanistan
November 2, 2001 / Znews.com --
Reporters are turning to hi-tech methods to get quick reports from remote locations to viewers back home. One system in use by CNN, for example, is the Talking Head system video phone, used in conjunction with a satellite telephone. This system was used during the CNN exclusive report from China in April, 2001 of the only live pictures of the departure of the chartered jet carrying the released U.S. crew of a Navy spy plane.
Live video can be transmitted at 64K, or the system can be used to send an entire video clip as an attachment. The live transmission quality is not very good, but it does allow reporters to cover events and report live from areas that may not be accessible with traditional equipment.
The Talking Head system is about the size of a large laptop computer, and the satellite phone is about the size of a briefcase. For more information, check out Talking Head Video Reporter and Inmarsat satellite communications.
